PUBLIC FIGURES & MOVING MONUMENTS

PUBLIC FIGURES, on the making of Berlin was inspired by the traces of history found in public parks of Berlin, where statues reflect the changing dreams and struggles of the city. The figures in this installation include Bismarck, Queen Elizabeth, Rosa Luxemburg, Lenin and various statues for Trummerfrauen (rubble women).

Viewing who is seen and isn’t seen led me to question who is monumentalized, who is missing and how those on display are depicted.

MOVING MONUMENTS documents the journey of monuments that have come and gone through Tiergarten.

The group exhibition, Zwischen den Gepfeln, explored the theme of bergs, or mountains. My initial research on this theme led me to investigate the Trummerfrauen, a name given to the heroic Berlin woman who were said to have helped clear the building rubble left after the bombing in the Second World War.

This got me thinking of how we construct heroes and put them on a pedestal, both literal and figuratively. I began to explore mountains of a different kind.
