Sie rannten nicht auf mich zu, sondern rannten von einer offenen Gr\u00fcnfl\u00e4che zur anderen. Diese Familien in Angst rennen zu sehen, hat mich mehr aus der Fassung gebracht, als dass ich gezwungen war, in die B\u00fcsche zu springen, um ihnen auszuweichen. Es erinnerte mich an Geschichten von Hausbesitzern in Kalifornien, die B\u00e4ren fanden, die wegen der Zugluft aus ihren M\u00fclltonnen fra\u00dfen, was bedeutete, dass die W\u00e4lder nicht genug Nahrung produzierten.<\/p>\n<p>Es kommt immer h\u00e4ufiger vor, dass St\u00e4dte auf der ganzen Welt unerwartetes Tierleben beherbergen. Weniger Raubtiere und leichter Zugang zu Nahrung machen es vielen Arten relativ leicht, in unseren St\u00e4dten zu koexistieren.<\/p>\n<p>Innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen von Berlin gibt es viele S\u00e4ugetiere, darunter Wildschweine, Biber, Kaninchen und F\u00fcchse. Der Tiergarten ist der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Park in der Mitte Berlins. Der Name Tiergarten bedeutet &#8222;Tier&#8220; oder &#8222;weiblicher Hirsch&#8220; und &#8222;Garten&#8220;, bezieht sich auf seine Geschichte als k\u00f6nigliches Jagdrevier.<\/p>\n<p>Ich entdeckte dies, als ich erst erfuhr, dass es im Herzen des Parks Statuen zum Gedenken an den J\u00e4ger gibt. Ich fragte mich, warum das so war, und begann mit den Nachforschungen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ab etwa 1527 wurde dieses Gebiet als k\u00f6nigliches Jagdrevier ausgewiesen. Obwohl nur K\u00f6nige \u00fcberall jagen konnten, auch auf privatem Land. Mitte der 1600er Jahre erlaubte das K\u00f6nigshaus der Allgemeinheit, dort zu jagen, was angesichts der damaligen Normen recht fortschrittlich war.\u00a0Hundert Jahre sp\u00e4ter, 1740, wurde das Land zu einem Garten. Sowohl die wirtschaftlichen als auch die politischen Strukturen begannen sich zu ver\u00e4ndern. Es dauerte weitere hundert Jahre, Proteste und der Revolutionsversuch von 1848, bis die Jagdprivilegien abgeschafft wurden. Noch immer waren die Jagdrechte auf Besitzer von mehr als 300 Hektar Land beschr\u00e4nkt.<\/p>\n<p>Heute findet man am s\u00fcdlichen Ende des Gro\u00dfen Tiergartens vier Statuen, die an die Jagd der Vergangenheit erinnern. Die Statuen wurden w\u00e4hrend einer Statuenrenaissance geschaffen. Tats\u00e4chlich wurden die meisten Statuen, die Sie heute im Tiergarten sehen, in den 30 Jahren zwischen 1878 und 1909 geschaffen. Dazu geh\u00f6ren die Siegessaule (die S\u00e4ule und der Siegesengel), Dichter, Schriftsteller, K\u00f6nig und K\u00f6nigin, Krieger, Reichsbauer und mehr.<\/p>\n<p>Zu den gejagten Tieren geh\u00f6ren ein Hase, ein Fuchs, ein Wildschwein und ein Wisent (oder B\u00fcffel). Wie sein amerikanischer Cousin wurde auch der europ\u00e4ische Wisent in den fr\u00fchen 1900er Jahren in der Wildnis bis zur Ausrottung gejagt, der letzte starb 1927 in der Wildnis. Wenn die Besucher nach Norden in das Reservat gehen, gehen sie auf erh\u00f6hten Metallg\u00e4ngen, die die freie Bewegung von Tieren und Insekten unter ihnen erm\u00f6glichen. Innerhalb dieses Grundst\u00fccks, das nur 20 Zugminuten vom Tiergarten im Zentrum Berlins entfernt liegt, findet man 49 Vogelarten, 14 Heuschrecken- und Grillenarten, 57 Spinnenarten und 95 Bienenarten. \u00dcber 60 dieser Arten sind vom Aussterben bedroht.<\/p>\n<p>Viele Stadtbewohner, mich eingeschlossen, halten Ungeziefer f\u00fcr l\u00e4stig, vor allem die kleinen Fruchtfliegen, die in meine K\u00fcche eingedrungen sind. Eine Studie einer Gruppe von Hobby-Entomologen, die seit 27 Jahren mit Unterst\u00fctzung mehrerer renommierter Forscher Insekten f\u00e4ngt, ergab jedoch einen R\u00fcckgang der Insektenbiomasse um 75% in 60 Naturschutzgebieten in Deutschland. Zu den wenigen Arten, die aktiv erhalten werden, geh\u00f6ren Flederm\u00e4use, Wanderfalken, Gottesanbeterinnen, Bienen und Biber.<\/p>\n<p>Erst am vergangenen Wochenende fuhr ich mit dem Fahrrad entlang der Panke und sah eine neue Installation von Bienenst\u00f6cken vor dem B\u00fcrgerpark, einem beliebten Park im Bezirk Pankow.<\/p>\n<p>Flederm\u00e4use bewohnen die Spandauer Zitadelle, wo sie den Winter verbringen, etwa 10.000 von ihnen. Ich habe sie im Sommer auch nachts fliegen sehen.<\/p>\n<p>In Seen in ganz Berlin findet man Mandarinenten, die farbenpr\u00e4chtigste Ente Berlins. Diese Art wurde in den 1800er Jahren f\u00fcr Zoos und Privatsammlungen nach Europa gebracht. Offenbar entkamen viele nicht nur in Berlin, sondern auch in den Niederlanden.<\/p>\n<p>Und im Tiergartensee tauchen immer wieder Schildkr\u00f6ten auf. Laut Nicolas Bogislav von Lettow-Vorbeck, Autor von Stadtwild, \u00e4hneln diese Schildkr\u00f6ten zwar der in Deutschland heimischen Schildkr\u00f6te, stammen aber eigentlich aus Florida. Tiersichtungen bringen Freude und erden uns in unserer eigenen menschlichen Natur. Wie Nicolas \u00fcberlegte: &#8222;Wir Menschen haben durch die Evolution und sogar in unserer DNA diese tiefe Verbindung zu den Tieren. They weren't running at me but running from one open green space to another. Seeing these families run in fear was more upsetting to me than being forced to jump into the bushes to avoid them. It reminded me of stories of homeowners in California who found bears eating from their garbage cans because of the draught, which meant the forests were not producing enough food.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is becoming more common that cities around the world are home to unexpected animal life. <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer predators and easy access to food make it relatively easy for many species to coexist in our cities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the city limits of Berlin, there are many mammals including wild boar, beaver, rabbits, fox. Tiergarten is the largest park in the center of Berlin. The name Tiergarten means 'animal' or 'female deer' and 'garden', refers to its history as a royal hunting ground.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I discovered this when only after learning there were statues memorializing hunter in the heart of the park. I wondered why this was so and started to do the research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From about 1527 this area was designated as a royal hunting ground. Although only royalty could hunt anywhere, including on private land. By the mid-1600s the royalty let the general public hunt there, which was rather progressive given the norms of the day.\u00a0A hundred years later, in 1740, the land became a garden. Both the economic and political structures were starting to shift. It took another hundred years, protest and the 1848 revolution attempt before hunting priveledges were removed. Still, hunting rights were limited to owners of land greater than 300 acres.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, at the south end of Grosser Tiergarten you can find four statues memorializing hunting of the past. The statues were created during a statue renaissance. Actually, most of the statues you see in Tiergarten today were created in the 30 years between 1878 and 1909. These include the Siegessaule (the column and victory angel), poets, writers, king and queen, warriors, empire builders and more. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hunted animals include a hare, fox, wild boar and a bison (or buffalo). Like it\u2019s American cousin, the European bison were hunted into extinction in the wild in the early 1900s, the last one died in the wild in 1927. As visitors walk north into the reserve they walk on elevated metal walkways that allow the free movement of animals and insects below. Within this plot of land just 20-minutes by train from Tiergarten in the center of Berlin, one can find 49 species of birds, 14 species of grasshoppers and crickets, 57 spider species and 95 bee species. Over 60 of these species are endangered.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many city dwellers, myself included, think of bugs as a nuisance, especially those little fruit flies that have invaded my kitchen. However, a study by a group of hobby entomologists who had been catching insects for 27 years, assisted by several renowned researchers, found a decline in insect biomass of 75% throughout 60 nature protection areas in Germany. I've also seen them flying at night in summer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In lakes throughout Berlin, you\u2019ll find Mandarin ducks, the most colorful duck in Berlin. This species was brought to Europe in the 1800s for zoos and private collections. Apparently, many escaped not just in Berlin but also in the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And turtles keep appearing in Tiergarten\u2019s lake. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Nicolas Bogislav von Lettow-Vorbeck, author of Stadtwild (City Wild), while these turtles resemble Germany\u2019s native turtle they are actually from Florida. Animal sightings bring pleasure and ground us in our own human nature. As Nicolas reflected, \u201cWe as humans, through evolution and even in our DNA, we have that deep connection with animals.
