ABOUT THE VIDEO

My first summer in Berlin, I missed out on the Freiluftkino (Open Air Cinema) experience. It was a very rainy summer, so between drops and researching cinemas that had English, I somehow didn’t find the time.

In 2018 I finally discovered the Freiluftkino in Kreuzberg which has original language films with English subtitles, and a great program! It was an unexpected adventure, just trying to set up the lounge chairs but that gave us a chance to interact with our neighbors. Later I learned there are six ways to set up a lounge chair, from Nastaran the manager of the Kruezberg location.

For this video I visited three very different but quite wonderful freiluftkino including Kreuzberg, Volkspark Rehberge, and Volkspark Friedrichshain. Almost every district has an open air cinema. Some have English language programs, for others, even English films are shown in German (dubbed).

It is wonderful to see a movie outside in the middle of the city. I especially love the lounge chairs (not available in all cinemas) and the fact that these cinemas provide blankets for when it gets chilly.

Special thank you to Louis, who owns the kinos I visited, and the wonderful staff!
